What
Do You Want to Accomplish?
Other
churches have incorporated dramas into their regular worship service. Should
you?
On
its own or in conjunction with a sermon, drama is an effective tool
to educate, illustrate or enhance a relevant point.
How can drama add value to your church program?
Entertainment
& Use of Gifts. Churches traditionally
stage events for entertainment or fellowship value, such as Christmas
concerts or Easter pageants. The blessing is two-fold:
(1) The event demonstrates the power of the celebration arts
to an appreciative audience; and (2) Performers, directors,
writers, designers, administrators, etc., have the opportunity to
contribute their artistic talents for the glory of God.
Ministry
Outlet. It's easy to romanticize
(or trivialize) the drama group as an actor's playground, but an
effective ministry follows the same structure, goals, and accountabilities
as any other church ministry. As an organized program, a drama ministry
can accommodate participants of all ages, personality types, backgrounds
and skill to expand the range of ministry opportunities available
to your church family.
Leadership
Training. A leader's greatest achievement
is training others to lead. Numerous opportunities exist in
the dramatic arts to encourage and develop new leaders offstage
through the creation of formal job functions, delegation of increasing
levels of responsibility, performance evaluations, and/or mentorship.
Despite the natural desire to stick with what seems to work, rotating
responsibilities and tasks encourages the flow of new ideas, growth
and cross-training, while discouraging cliques, stagnation, or worse,
maintaining the status quo.
Discipleship.
By following a discipleship model, the ministry chooses to
explore the team's spiritual growth as a primary goal, while providing
a safe environment for artistic exploration (the theatrical presentation)
as a secondary perspective. This type of ministry works from
the inside-out, rather than the outside-in, and considers all participation
and gifts equal.
Community.
A drama ministry can be a community-building experience, where individuals
regularly support one another with prayer, encouragement, and companionship.
Connectivity.
The small-group aspect of a drama ministry -- together with the
universal language of theater -- can serve as a bridge to newcomers
or those looking for a place to belong.
Artistic
Development. A drama ministry can provide weeknight opportunities
for cross-training performance skills via ongoing exercises or classes.
Strategic
Direction. Do you know your church's
Top 5 strategic initiatives? A drama ministry can be a powerful
player in supporting and advancing the overall goals of your church.
A strategically-oriented ministry always connects back to
the strategic objectives, even for a seemingly-random sketch.
Outreach.
Drama can be a vehicle for outreach beyond the church walls,
through special events, collaborations with other arts groups, or
touring.
Public
Relations. Drama can accelerate word-of-mouth in both the congregation
and community. It can generate press results and give a church a
contemporary feel in ways that traditional service opportunities
might not.
There
is no wrong or right way to structure your drama ministry. But
when you know what you want to accomplish -- and stay true to that
vision -- success invariably will follow.

Best
wishes as you begin your adventure!
