Based
in Minnesota, Church Dramas supports the development of theater
arts ministries for small churches and missions through consultation,
prayer, and resource networking for playwrights and script material.
Short
topical drama scripts (3-4 minutes in length) for the worship service
are also available in books for purchase. The scripts contained
in the Church Dramas Books are primarily intended as Sermon Enhancements
(i.e., they are intended to preface a sermon or teaching). The dramas
are structured to:
- Provide
background or supplementary information on the sermon topic
or theme;
- Ask
a question to be answered later, during the sermon;
- Evoke
an emotion -- such as betrayal or anger -- to guide the congregation
to the mindset of the sermon being discussed; or
- Generate
enthusiasm or provide entertainment to complement the sermon
topic.
Note:
Some of the dramas do not mention God or religion. This is intentional.
A sermon enhancement drama is not intended to teach on its own but
to "set up" the sermon. To be as accessible of a lead-in
as possible, often sermon enhancement dramas use a parallel, secular
storyline to reach the widest audience.
Other
types of church dramas are:
- Christian
Education, such as Sunday school classes. These dramas often
serve as lessons on their own.
- Outreach,
such as full-length productions or dinner theaters. These are
longer dramas which are an event by themselves and serve as
an outreach tool to introduce community members to a church
in a non-threatening environment.
